This nomination for the owners of the large-scale fullonicae (laundry and cloth-finishing workshops) in Pompeii and other Roman cities. This was a malodorous but vital and industrialized sector. The fullonica owners operated substantial workshops with complex layouts: vats for soaking garments in urine (as a degreasing agent), basins for rinsing, and areas for trampling clothes in fuller’s earth. Their business went beyond basic Roman laundry; it included the finishing of newly woven cloth, a critical step in textile production. The largest fullonicae, like the Fullonica of Stephanus in Pompeii, were sizeable industrial workshops employing dozens of workers, indicating significant capital investment and management skill. Evidence suggests some establishments developed a reputation for qualityan early form of service branding. These entrepreneurs demonstrated that even the most mundane and unpleasant services could be scaled into profitable, organized industries when demand is consistent (in a society that prized the white toga) and processes are standardized. They proved that urban economies require and support specialized industrial service sectors, and that success in such fields comes from efficient process management and, potentially, the cultivation of a trusted name for reliability.
