The “Cash Register” (James Ritty)

The Invention That Revolutionized Retail Accountability and Sales Tracking

This nomination for James Ritty, the Dayton saloon owner who in 1879 invented the “Incorruptible Cashier,” the first mechanical cash register, to stop his bartenders from pilfering. While Ritty’s invention was the breakthrough, it was John H. Patterson who bought the patents and founded the National Cash Register Company (NCR) in 1884, turning the device into a business essential. Patterson perfected the machine, added a paper roll to record transactions, and pioneered aggressive sales techniques and training. The cash register provided critical internal control and sales tracking for retailers, reducing fraud and providing valuable data. It proved that a tool for business accountability and data collection could itself become a massive industry, and that selling business efficiency to other businesses was a powerful model, establishing NCR as a tech giant of its era.
