The First Permanent Trade Link Across the Pacific
This nomination for the Spanish captains, merchants, and officials who operated the Manila Galleon trade route from 1565 to 1815. This was the first permanent, regular trade link across the Pacific, connecting the Spanish Americas (Acapulco) with Asia (Manila). Spanish American silver from Potosí and Mexico was shipped to Manila, where it was traded for Chinese silks, porcelain, and spices. These Asian goods were then transported back to Acapulco and onward to Europe. This route completed the first global circular trade network, directly linking the silver mines of America with the manufacturing centers of China. The Manila Galleon proved that transpacific trade on a massive scale was possible and profitable, deepening globalization and demonstrating how a single commodity (silver) could act as the universal fuel for intercontinental exchange, binding the economies of Asia, the Americas, and Europe together for 250 years.
